Evaluating Information Sources

Nowadays, it is so much easier and faster to find any kind of information since we no longer need to look for it in books, but instead we can find it on the web. Moreover, Internet is a good source of fresh information as it gets updated constantly.

However, there is always a negative side, as well. In fact, the main disadvantage of the Internet is that anyone can make a website, therefore, you can come across lots of grammar and spelling mistakes, for example. Next, it is also difficult to find a relevant piece of information as you easily get lost in all the amount of material that is on the net. So, for this reason when we are using the web as a source we have to take into consideration a few things:
  • What type of domain does it come from? (i.e. .uk, .edu, .org, etc.)
  • Who is the author?
  • Does the publisher or publication have a reputation for reliability?
  • Is contact information for the author or group available on the site?
  • When was the page last updated?
However, until now I usually looked only at the domain, the layout and language. With this activity I realized that there are many other important data, which can help you judge the credibility of the information provided.

Hi katja!
You are right when you say that online materials is constantly updated and because of this we can find new information every day and in a very quick way but I also agree with you about the uncertain reliability of this information. Sometimes it's really hard to judge all the materials we find on the web and as you said it's easy to get lost on it.
Besides, It's interesting that you looked at the language and layout of the web site to judge the sources.
Now we surely have more criterias to follow for making our evaluations thanks to the sites Sarah suggested us and that will be very useful for our future researces.
ps Well honestly I learnt a lot from these sites!

See you in class

Hi Katja,

I’m sorry, I’m a little bit late for the responding part. I can use the Internet only in the evening because I work during the day and it didn’t work at home in the last few days. You rightly pointed out both the advantage and the disantvantage of the Internet as source of information. I completely agree with you and think we should take advantage of what the Net offers us but at the same time be critical as much as possible when we use it.

Bye bye,

Selena:)
